The Dalai Lama’s 80th Birthday!

IMG_9951“In China, Tibetan communities have been marking the birthday since the Tibetan New Year in February, in defiance of authorities. In May, a 35-year-old father of four in Sichuan province immolated himself to protest a crackdown on birthday celebrations.”

I’m quoting the excellent cover story of Sunday’s Los Angeles Times that explains how this major milestone for the Dalai Lama combined with China’s economic boom is raising pressing issues of leadership, compromise, and sense of place versus sense of acceptance.
